Driving and walking= unrelated

I drive, and I’ve done so since I was 15 1/2 (which used to be, and possibly still is, the age at which you can drive with a parent in New Hampshire, no permit necessary- live free or die, bitches!). I guess the idea of a wheelchair user driving is surprising to many people. Often, after finding out that I drive, people ask me, “Can you walk at all?” Well, yes, but that has nothing to do with driving. It’s not like I have a Flintstone car or Fisher-Price toy car that I propel with my feet. In fact, I don’t use my feet to drive at all; there is a hand control hooked up to the pedals that I pull for gas and push to brake, and a knob on my steering wheel to make it easier to steer with one hand.

Another driving-related gripe I’ve been meaning to write about is as follows. In order to put my wheelchair into my car, I have to take the wheels off, fold it, and put it in the passenger seat; a pain in the ass, yes, but something I do all the time. Every time I am seen doing this I am asked if I need help, and I always politely decline. Most of the time people continue on their merry way. But sometimes people slowly pseudo-back-away while staring at me because I guess they’re just so damn curious (or perhaps dubious) about how I’m going to do it. Much like this guy, these people just need to myob and forget about me.  I said no thanks- now go away.

  1. Hi again

Well, you already know my views on how rude people can be in reaction to wheelchairs but I’m sorry to hear of the ignorance you experience as a result of driving. I suppose it might be worse if TAB people didn’t care enough to ask if they can help? If only they’d take the hint :-)

  2. Do you ever wonder what planet people are from? I’ve been around wheelchair user making use of motorized transpo my entire life and have been using one for 7 years; still, people qawk like wheelchairs and cars HAVE NEVER BEFORE BEEN TOGETHER.

  3. Thanks ladies- it’s good to know I’m not alone in experiencing this!

  4. [...] shit. I’m not sure how exactly one gets a traffic violation without being able to drive. But, as I know all too well, able-bodied people seem to think of driving and disability as mutually exclusive, so I guess [...]

  5. Just came across your blog and I had to post a comment. I live in NY and have been living on the same block for some time, and as a consequence I have gotten to know pretty much everybody from the neighborhood (you try and stay incognito on a wheelchair in NY). Anyway, there’s a real nice elderly super who insists on helping me put my chair into my car every time I park in front of his building, forget the fact that he’s fucking up my putting the wheelchair into my backseat process (which I have down to a science), he did his good deed for the day, infuriating!!

  6. Gah! Stuff like that kills me. I hate how some people make it SO difficult to refuse their offers of help.

  7. [...] ready to bust out my usual “No, thanks, I don’t need any help” (like I’ve mentioned before, I get asked if I need help putting my chair in my car about 5 times a day). Then I notice the guy [...]
