I’m biking for MS- and you can help

For months now, I’ve biked for my own benefit.  It’s fun and has helped my arm strength tremendously.  Now I get to bike to help others in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s City to Shore 2008.  The ride goes from Philadelphia to the Jersey shore- much farther than I can actually cycle- but I will be riding at least the first and last legs.

Having Friedreich’s Ataxia, I am all too familiar with the life-altering effects of a progressive neurological disease.  Besides my personal experience, I have learned much from my friends with MS.  At Inglis House, where I volunteer, many people have MS, and the drastic impact it has had on their lives never ceases to touch me.  I might have trouble balancing, or struggle to button shirts; these people can’t swallow solid food or use their hands.  Of course, this is the far end of the spectrum; I know other people with MS who can walk and may never experience such extremely disabling symptoms.  Just like with FA, there is a range of disabled-ness.

The ride is a big fundraiser for the National MS Society.  They don’t just fund research, but also help people with MS in their daily lives: they might give an air conditioner to someone with heat sensitivity (a common symptom) or help them get to doctor’s appointments.  I’m trying to raise $500.  If you would like to help, with any amount at all, please check out my personal fundraising page where you can donate easily.  I won’t be offended if no one donates (trust me, I know times are tough), but if you do, I would be immensely appreciative!

Thanks folks.

Update, 9/15: I’ve gotten a tremendous amount of support from family and friends, and I’m upping my goal to $1000!  Many thanks to those who have helped already.  It really means a lot to me!

  1. Congratulations on meeting your first goal! It being election season I’ve made a lot of promises of funds, but I’ll see if I can pull together a small contribution in honor of my cool former coworker with MS (don’t worry, he’s fine, he just moved on and I never see him anymore!)

  2. [...] went golfing today. This girl is crazy. She mentioned on her blog that she is going to be biking to raise money for MS. For months now, I’ve biked for my own benefit.  It’s fun and has helped my arm strength [...]

  3. Good luck with the bike trek!

It was nice meeting you at the Eagles game. You’ll have to blog about your tailgaiting adventures and send me a copy of the picture your friend took of us.

  4. Great job on the MS! I couldn’t do 55 on a bike especially in (ugh) jersey!
