Commenting on my recent post about pumpkin dishes, Kelly recommended pumpkin spice lattes. Today when I was downtown, chilly and wheeling past a Starbucks, I decided it was a perfect day to try one. Few independent coffee shops are accessible; as much as I would rather support a small business, I’m not going to ask someone to lift me in just so I can do so. Here’s a hint to all those places: get on the accessibility bandwagon.
Anyway, my overpriced, big-chain supporting pumpkin spice soy latte was wonderful- and a lovely shade of pale orange. I haven’t been able to drink much coffee since, over a year ago, I got sick after drinking some; though unrelated, it put me off coffee for a long time. I’m just starting to get back into it, and today’s latte was tasty enough to convince me I could do the coffee thing again. So even if you’re not a huge coffee fan, give this stuff a try.
Edit: There is some confusion as to whether the pumpkin spice syrup is vegan. But I think it’s all good- check out their allergen chart here (it says it’s dairy-free) and this thread on our very own PPK where Carrie posted the response she got when inquiring with Torani (the company that makes the syrups used at Starbucks and elsewhere).

I hate to burst your bubble but the pumpkin spice syrup isn’t vegan. The Gingerbread Latte is though!

What!? Not vegan? That’s frigging ridiculous. Ew.. Well, Thanks for the heads up! Guess I’ll try the gingerbread.

Thanks for the shout out.
I am honored. Although I share your surprise about the syrup not being vegan. That’s stupid.

That’s good to know. Thanks for the update. I don’t understand why there are not labeling systems for things like this. I find it frustrating to read all the ingredients when a simple universal symbol designating something as vegan would do, the same thing with gluten free. I know I have no right to complain as an omni who is trying to eat fewer animal products but seriously, it shouldn’t be so hard to figure out if something is vegan when buying something at the grocery store or going to a restaurant.

that’s a bummer. my favorite seasonal latte is a peppermint latte. but I also like coffe w/ kahlua, but that’s not going to be at most coffee shops
